Intro to Marketing & Business Services

Starting in the 2026-27 school year, the Intro to Marketing program will be part of Career Focus.

In these year-long courses, students learn what it means to be successful employees and gain valuable skills they can use in work and life. Like our traditional programs, students learn in the classroom and then apply their knowledge through hands-on projects in our labs. Small class sizes, plenty of support and a just-right pace help students thrive and prepare for life after high school.

Following a successful year, students have a selection of opportunities for their next step based on their needs and goals.

If working with people, products and money sounds exciting to you, explore the world of retail, business and marketing.

Hello! My name is Kyle Retan, and I am the Instructor for the Retail and Business Services program. This year marks my 10th year here at the ISD! One of the absolute best parts of my job is watching students build real-world career skills while having fun doing it.

My path to marketing was an unexpected twist of fate. I earned my bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Grand Valley State University, fully planning to teach young children. However, my first placement at Wyoming Junior High changed everything. Once I stepped into a classroom with older students, I was completely hooked—mostly because high schoolers actually get my jokes! To ensure my students get the highest quality instruction, I later earned my master's degree in urban education at Davenport State University and obtained my CTE certification through Ferris State University.

Outside the classroom, my professional roots run deep. To work my way through college, I took a part-time job at a local health club and eventually advanced into management. That experience gave me hands-on leadership, retail, and marketing expertise that I love sharing with my students today. More recently, my husband and I have channeled our entrepreneurial spirits into starting our own online resale business, Retan Resellers, which gives me fresh, real-world business insights to bring directly to my students.

When I am not teaching or sourcing inventory, my family keeps me incredibly busy! My husband is also a teacher, so we take full advantage of our summers off to travel, hike, and explore the great outdoors with our kids.

Tamara Reaume, Career Tech Education Specialist

I am a graduate of CMU with a BAA in Commercial Recreation & Facilities Management and a Minor in Marketing.  After working several years with the Denver Convention Complex, my husband and I moved back to Michigan to be closer to family.  I left the event management world, started a family, and found a new path in elementary education as a paraprofessional in Rockford Public Schools.  In addition to an intervention position, I led a school-wide Mindful Movement for the 450 students for six years.

In search of a new experience and an opportunity to come back to my marketing roots, I found a position in the Intro to Retail Marketing as a CTES.  It's been a joy working with the older student population!
