Industry Trends/Job Prospects

In addition to openings from growth, many job openings will be created by the need to replace retiring technicians. Job opportunities are expected to be very good for those who complete post-secondary automotive training programs and who earn ASE certification. Some employers report difficulty in finding workers with the right skills.

State of Michigan Mechanics License Testing

The State of Michigan requires all technicians who repair motor vehicles for compensation in any category of major repair to be certified by the State of Michigan. Anyone who wishes to be certified can take the certification tests at a Secretary of State Branch Office. For additional information on technician testing and to find a branch office near you visit the Michigan Secretary of State.

Every spring second year students have the opportunity to take two of the state tests.

ASE Certification

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is an organization that works to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. Technicians take the ASE test to set themselves apart from others in the field of automotive repair. The tests are difficult to pass and are often linked to pay increases for the technicians who successfully pass the tests.

For more information on the benefits of ASE certification visit the ASE website.

Post Secondary Opportunities

There are many schools that offer post secondary training to those who wish to work in the automotive field. Some of the most popular schools for our students include: Grand Rapids Community College, University of Northwestern Ohio and Ferris State University.

Students can earn college credit or articulation with numerous post-secondary schools by successfully completing automotive technology classes at The Tech Center. Students must either earn a letter grade of B or better and may need to meet additional requirements depending on where they apply for college.
