Autism XR - The next evolution

This project is the continuation of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow project that the 3D program worked on during the 2017-2018 school year. This application was created by high school (Kent Career Tech Center) and college undergraduate students (Ferris State University) with guidance from educators and industry professionals.

Information about the Autism XR application

The current version of the project allows the user to create a web-based augment reality environment and work through lessons that teach specific social behaviors and interactions. 

Autism XR uses the webXR platform which allows users to experience augmented reality environments on their mobile device without downloading device-specific applications or equipment. The application is easy to use and provides the user with a safe environment that they can practice social behaviors and interactions. 

The application monitors eye contact, personal space, voice recognition, and will soon have machine learning for emotion and facial expression detection.

The Autism XR project was accepted in the 2019 Siggraph Conference located in Los Angeles, California.

Using the AutismXR web application

WebXR is a very new and experimental technology that currently has a limited supported device list. AutismXR is currently only working on select Android devices. If you would like to see if you have a supported Android device that can use the WebXR platform you can follow the steps below.

  1. ARcore - Click here while browsing with your mobile device to navigate to the Google Play Store. If you are given the option to install ARcore, then your device should be able to use the AutismXR web application. You can proceed to step 2.
  2. Chrome Canary - Click here to download and install the Chrome Canary version 70 experimental browser. Newer versions of the browser are currently experiencing issues with running webXR content. Version 70 is a stable copy that has full functionality. After installation proceed to step 3.
  3. After installation of the Google Chrome Canary v70 browser is complete, type the following link, Chrome://flags in your Canary v70 browser. Search for webXR while on the Chrome://flags page and enable all of the results returned from the search. This will allow your device to use the webXR content through the browser.
  4. AutismXR - If you were able to successfully complete the first 3 steps, then you are ready to open up your Chrome Canary v70 browser and navigate here (https://marcpetz.com) and begin using the web application.
