The Regional Theatre Tech program is now in its 14th year. It started in 1998 as a partnership between Kent Career Technical Center, the Van Singel Fine Arts Center and Byron Center High School. Graduates of the program are working in all levels of theatre from national tours to regional theatrical productions. Some have pursued higher education degrees and many are working as union stage hands, freelance technicians and designers. See below for a list of some of the achievements of our graduates:
Nick A. --currently employed at the Intersection and Stage Works and has worked with many other Grand Rapids area companies in addition to doing freelance work and working at the Van Singel.
Austin R. --is a much sought after properties designer. He worked with several area producers and theatres including Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Spectrum Theatre and Circle Theatre. He has been on several tours including the national tour of Singin’ in the Rain, was recently working the national tour of Young Frankenstein and is now with La Cage aux Folles.
Amber S. --graduated from Michigan State University was technical director at Grandville Public Schools and is now is the KCTC theatre tech instructor for this class and Technical Director at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center.
Steve H. --toured with Singin' in the Rain three months after graduating high school, graduated from Western Michigan University and is currently finishing his Masters at University of Missouri- Kansas City while serving as the Interim Technical Director for Calvin College.
Cameron G. --has worked at the Intersection and back stage at Forest Hills Performing Arts Center and at Lansing Sexton High School Auditorium.
Mike K. --was hired as a full time assistant technical director at Kentwood Community Church not long after graduation.
Greg M. --assisted with the mounting of the national tour Singin’ in the Rain here at the Van Singel. He has also worked at other area venues including Forest Hills Performing Arts Center and Spectrum Theatre. He is currently working as an Assistant Technical Director with area college theatre departments.
Eleanor W.--has worked at various venues through her association with IATSE (International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees).
Aaron M. -- After graduation Aaron was employed by the east coast producer Candlewood International and worked as a stage hand in the national tours of Singin’ in the Rain and Titanic: The Musical. Aaron is also employed by the IATSE stage hands union.
Mike D. --works at various venues through his employment with IATSE (International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees).
Don D. --works at various Grand Rapids venues through his association with IATSE (International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees).
Cole & Austin G. --these brothers have worked several professional productions at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. They have also worked back stage for the home school theatrical productions. Cole currently works as the director for several home school theatre events in West Michigan and will be directing Byron Center Community Theatre productions next summer. Austin is pursuing a career in banking.
Mason G. --brother of Cole and Austin, he worked at DK Security to work major events at the Van Andel Arena, DeVos Performance Hall and other area venues. Mason has also worked part time as back stage crew member at the Van Singel
Jeremy C.-- graduated from the KCTC Theatre Tech program is is currently the Technical Stage Coordinator at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center.
Valerie V. --Val graduating from MSU with a BA in theatre costume design and minor in Russian. Val’s costuming jobs take her all over the United States. In between her costuming jobs on the east coast, in Chicago and St. Louis Val also works part time at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center.
Ryan S. --owns ACP Entertainment with his parents, offering a wide variety of equipment and services for events such as Concert Production Services, DJ service, Party Rentals, Concession Trailers, Fireworks, and more. Ryan also works various shows and rentals at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center, recently signed on with IATSE and is pursuing a degree in business.
